A new study by the Danish Gambling Authority (Spillemyndigheden) has found that gambling education programmes are helping young people better understand betting risks, gambling mechanics and the importance of choosing licensed operators. Published on 29 October 2026, the research evaluated educational presentations delivered to upper-secondary students across Denmark between September 2024 and March 2025.

The findings suggest improved awareness of gambling-related risks, although the research does not establish whether these changes translate into lasting behavioural improvements.

Regulation & Compliance

Key Takeaways From Denmark's Gambling Education Study

  • The Danish Gambling Authority published its latest youth gambling education study on 29 October 2026.

  • Researchers collected 1,433 responses before educational sessions and 534 follow-up responses.

  • The share of male students paying close attention to gambling licence status rose from 39% to 61%.

  • The proportion of male respondents citing financial gain as a gambling motivation declined from 64% to 54%.

  • Students demonstrated greater awareness of gambling mathematics and the regulator’s licensing mark.

  • The study found changes in reported knowledge and attitudes but could not establish long-term behavioural effects.

Gambling Education Improves Awareness Among Students

According to the Danish Gambling Authority’s official research announcement, the programme introduces students to gambling mathematics, financial risks and the differences between licensed and unlicensed operators.

The findings show that 82% of follow-up respondents recognised the regulator’s licensing mark as an indication of Danish authorisation.

Among male respondents, the proportion identifying entertainment as a gambling motivation rose from 70% to 87%.

In a statement accompanying the findings, Spillemyndigheden said:

Our presentations at upper-secondary schools work.

The regulator intends to continue offering educational presentations free of charge.

Research Highlights Important Limitations

Despite improvements in reported awareness, the research does not demonstrate a significant reduction in gambling participation. The initial and follow-up surveys involved different groups of respondents, and the study included no separate control group.

Consequently, researchers could not establish whether individual students changed their gambling habits or whether improvements would persist over time. These limitations distinguish increased knowledge from measurable reductions in gambling-related harm.

What the Findings Mean for Gambling Operators

The results reinforce the importance of consumer education within regulated gambling markets.

Denmark has already introduced updated responsible gambling guidance for licensed operators, emphasising player protection and early intervention.

Similar priorities are emerging internationally. Slovakia recently launched research into youth gambling risks and gaming mechanics, while Australia’s Victoria regulator introduced a new gambling harm awareness campaign.

For operators and industry stakeholders, the Danish findings highlight the value of clearly explaining gambling risks and licensing information.

However, further research will be needed to determine whether greater awareness leads to safer gambling decisions over the longer term.
