The Netherlands Gambling Authority (Kansspelautoriteit, KSA) has launched two public awareness campaigns to prevent gambling-related harm and encourage young adults to seek support. Announced on 2 November 2026, the initiatives focus on helping parents discuss gambling risks with their children and making self-exclusion more accessible to people experiencing gambling problems.

According to the KSA’s official announcement, the campaigns will run from early November and build on the regulator’s wider efforts to improve gambling awareness and player protection.

Kansspelautoriteit campaigns encourage open discussions on gambling harm and safer gambling practices.

Key Takeaways From the KSA's New Campaigns

  • The KSA has introduced two campaigns addressing gambling awareness and self-exclusion.

  • OpenOverGokken encourages parents of young people aged 16–25 to discuss gambling risks.

  • The Gokstop campaign targets young adults experiencing gambling problems or showing signs of increased risk.

  • Both initiatives aim to make early conversations and protective action easier.

  • The campaigns complement existing Dutch player protection measures rather than introducing new operator requirements.

OpenOverGokken Encourages Earlier Conversations

The first campaign focuses on parents who may not realise how frequently their children encounter gambling-related content.

According to the KSA, young people are exposed to gambling through social media, online videos, advertisements and games. However, parents may struggle to recognise this exposure or know how to discuss its potential risks.

OpenOverGokken addresses this gap by featuring young people discussing conversations they already have with their parents about subjects such as sex and safety.

The campaign encourages families to include gambling in these discussions, even when there are no immediate signs of a problem.

It builds on the OpenOverGokken information platform launched in 2025, which provides independent guidance on gambling behaviour and support services.

The initiative also complements the KSA’s existing restrictions on untargeted gambling advertising, designed to reduce exposure among minors and vulnerable audiences.

Gokstop Campaign Promotes Self-Exclusion

The second campaign focuses on young adults experiencing gambling problems and those at greater risk of harm.

The campaign’s central message is that any moment can be the right time to stop gambling. The regulator encourages individuals to consider self-exclusion without waiting for a major personal or financial crisis.

The initiative promotes Gokstop, a service connected to the Dutch Central Register for Exclusion from Gambling (Cruks). Through this system, individuals can exclude themselves from licensed online gambling platforms, casinos and gaming halls for at least six months.

The campaign highlights everyday situations in which someone might decide to stop gambling, while also recognising the important role of friends and family in encouraging people to seek support.

The initiative follows earlier regulatory attention to identity verification weaknesses affecting Cruks checks at land-based gambling venues.

What the Campaigns Mean for Dutch Operators

Although the campaigns do not introduce additional compliance obligations, they reinforce the importance of preventive communication, accessible self-exclusion tools and timely player intervention.

For licensed operators, the initiatives sit alongside the KSA’s updated duty-of-care guidance, which emphasises identifying risky gambling behaviour and responding appropriately.

The campaigns also demonstrate the regulator’s broader approach to harm prevention, combining public education with existing safeguards.

For the Dutch iGaming sector, the message is clear. Player protection extends beyond regulatory compliance and increasingly includes helping consumers recognise gambling risks before they escalate.
