New York’s mobile sportsbooks generated $214.37 million in gross gaming revenue (GGR) during July 2026, up 37.8% from $155.56 million a year earlier, according to the New York State Gaming Commission. The increase came despite lower monthly betting volume. Handle fell 16.7% from June to $1.88 billion, while GGR rose 83.6% as the statewide sportsbook hold recovered from 5.2% to 11.4%.

New York’s July Betting Figures at a Glance

  • Mobile handle: $1.88 billion, down 16.7% from June but 34.0% higher than in July 2025.
  • Gross gaming revenue: $214.37 million, up 83.6% month on month and 37.8% year on year.
  • Sportsbook hold: 11.4%, compared with 5.2% in June and 11.1% in July 2025.
  • Platform-provider share: Licensed operators retained $105.04 million after the state’s allocation.
  • Education funding: New York recorded $109.33 million in net revenue for education during the month.
  • Fiscal-year position: Handle for April to July rose 13.7% year on year, while GGR remained 3.0% lower.

Higher Hold Offsets the Monthly Handle Decline

July’s results show why handle and revenue can move in different directions. Bettors wagered $375.55 million less than in June, but sportsbook GGR increased by $97.60 million because operators retained a larger share of stakes after paying winnings.

The 11.4% hold was close to the 11.1% recorded in July 2025. This means annual revenue growth broadly tracked the 34.0% increase in handle, rather than reflecting a major change in margin from the prior-year month.

The same pattern of rising sportsbook revenue alongside moderating handle growth is examined in the 2026 AGA State of the States report, providing broader context for New York’s July results.

Education Allocation Reaches $109.3 Million

The Commission recorded $109.33 million in July net revenue for education, up from $59.56 million in June and $79.34 million a year earlier. Platform providers received the remaining $105.04 million of GGR.

New York’s report notes that mobile betting GGR is calculated on a cash basis. Stakes on future events count as current revenue, while payouts are recognised when winning wagers are redeemed. This accounting treatment can contribute to monthly volatility, making longer-period comparisons useful alongside headline results.

The state’s revenue allocation also illustrates why sportsbook taxation remains a significant policy issue across the US. In neighbouring New Jersey, lawmakers have considered a proposed World Cup sports betting surcharge, showing how states continue to assess betting as a source of public funding.

Fiscal-Year Handle Grows While GGR Trails

From April through July, New York mobile handle reached $8.43 billion, 13.7% above the same four months of 2025. GGR totalled $779.42 million, however, down 3.0% from $803.68 million in the prior-year period.

The difference largely reflects June 2026, when the hold fell to 5.2%, and GGR dropped to $116.76 million despite a $2.25 billion handle. July’s rebound lifted fiscal-year education revenue to $397.53 million, still around 3.0% below the comparable 2025 total.
