Growth in the Online Casino Sector Fuels Q2 Revenue
The Spanish gambling sector has posted remarkable growth in Q2 2025. According to the report published by Spain’s Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ), total revenue hit €410.3 million. There was significant growth across several parameters, including deposits, withdrawals, and Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR).
Total deposits increased 23.66% year-on-year, reaching €1.35 billion, while withdrawals grew by 28.9% since Q2 2024, amounting to €962.9 million. The Q2 figures also slightly trumped the revenue generated in the previous quarter. While the GGR increased by 2.79% in Q2 2025, reaching €410.26 million, deposits decreased by 0.4% compared to Q1 2025.
Online gambling accounted for the majority of the revenue share, comprising 52.7% of Q2 GGR, amounting to €216.4 million. Sports betting followed suit, accounting for 41% of the GGR, amounting to €171.4 million. While sports betting revenue witnessed a massive YoY increase of 18.2%, quarterly growth was a mere 2.7%.
The DGOJ report shows a 24.6% increase in the pre-match betting sector. However, live betting suffered a significant setback, declining by 33.2%. Fixed-odds bets, such as horse racing, witnessed a slight increase of 3.2%, and the casino sector grew 26%. Slot machine revenue comprised 33.6% of the surge, with blackjack and live roulette following closely behind. Meanwhile, the popularity of bingo declined by 6.9% YoY.
Operators Increase Marketing Spending to Fuel Growth
Q2 2025 witnessed a steady increase in marketing expenses. Operators spent €164.5 million on promotions, marking a 37.1% YoY growth. One of the leading causes behind the rising marketing cost was a sharp 52.98% increase in sponsorship spending compared to the previous quarter.
Higher marketing expenses resulted in growing player interest, with the number of new registrations increasing 1.7% YoY, or 504,853 accounts. The partial annulment of the Royal Decree 958/2020 by the Spanish Supreme Court earlier this year further contributed to the rise in player activity.
The mean count of active player accounts increased 21% YoY to reach 1.7 million, although the figure took a slight dip of 2.4% compared to the previous quarter. Overall, the market showed resilience during Q2 2025, despite a few setbacks in certain areas, especially when compared to the first quarter.
As of the end of the second quarter, 77 licensed gambling operators are active in Spain. Of these, 64 operators held at least one gambling licence during the period. The list includes 52 licensed remote casino operators, 42 sports betting companies, 9 poker operators, 4 bingo platforms, and 2 contest providers.
