The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) has published a new industry-wide Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Statement of Principles for the regulated UK betting and gaming sector, releasing the framework ahead of International Women’s Day on 8 March.

The initiative establishes a shared framework for inclusive workplace standards across operators, technology providers and retail betting businesses represented by the council, which collectively account for more than 90% of Britain’s regulated gambling market.

What The BGC’s DEI Principles Mean For The Betting Sector

The principles aim to provide a baseline framework for member companies to develop inclusive workplace policies while aligning with broader governance expectations across the regulated gambling sector.

Strategic implications for operators and suppliers:

  • Workplace standards formalised: The principles establish common expectations for recruitment practices, career progression and workplace conduct.
  • Governance pressure increases: Operators face growing scrutiny to demonstrate internal culture and employment practices aligned with regulatory expectations.
  • Leadership accountability expands: Senior management teams are expected to play a more active role in embedding inclusive policies within organisations.
  • Industry coordination grows: The BGC plans to use sector-wide forums to share best practices and track diversity initiatives across member companies.
  • Reputation management becomes strategic: Social responsibility policies increasingly influence public perception and regulatory dialogue around gambling.

The council said the framework is intended to strengthen trust in the regulated sector by encouraging companies to maintain workplaces that are fair, safe and inclusive.

Four Core Principles For Workplace Inclusion

The DEI Statement of Principles outlines four core commitments for BGC members: treating employees with dignity and respect, promoting fair opportunity and inclusive practices, supporting employee wellbeing, and ensuring safe and responsible working environments.

These commitments apply across betting shops, corporate offices, technology teams and customer-facing roles throughout the industry. The council said the initiative recognises that companies are at different stages in developing inclusion policies but aims to create a shared baseline across the sector.

Grainne Hurst, Chief Executive of the Betting and Gaming Council, said the announcement reflects the industry’s responsibility to maintain respectful workplaces. Hurst said

Our sector employs hundreds of thousands of people across shops, offices, technology hubs and customer-facing roles, we have a responsibility to ensure those workplaces are fair, respectful and safe for everyone.

She added that several BGC member companies have already introduced initiatives such as enhanced parental leave policies, menopause support strategies and expanded mental health programmes as part of broader workplace wellbeing efforts.

To support implementation, the council will leverage its People’s Forum, a cross-industry platform designed to share best practices and help companies develop practical diversity initiatives. The BGC is also conducting a sector-wide survey aimed at improving understanding of workforce diversity across the regulated gambling market.

Social Responsibility Initiatives Gain Importance Across The Sector

The launch reflects a wider shift across the gambling industry toward stronger social responsibility frameworks that extend beyond consumer protection into corporate governance and workplace culture.

Industry bodies, regulators and policymakers increasingly view internal company standards as part of the broader sustainability of regulated gambling markets. Initiatives tied to employee wellbeing, education and responsible gambling awareness have become more prominent in sector-led programmes.

This trend is also visible in collaborative initiatives focused on harm prevention and education. Partnerships between gambling industry organisations and youth or community groups are expanding efforts to deliver training on identifying and addressing gambling-related risks. One recent initiative involves the collaboration between Ygam and the National Youth Agency to expand training programmes addressing online gambling harms and safeguarding awareness.

Building A Baseline For Industry-Wide Cultural Change

The BGC said the DEI framework is designed as a starting point rather than a prescriptive rulebook, allowing companies to develop their own diversity strategies while aligning with the shared principles.

The council plans to monitor progress across member organisations and encourage companies to report on initiatives that support workplace inclusion.

By establishing common standards across operators and suppliers, the BGC aims to support long-term workforce development while reinforcing confidence in the regulated UK betting and gaming industry.
