Slovakia’s national Gambling Help Line has handled more than 2,800 calls during its first year of operation, reflecting growing demand for support services related to gambling addiction and harmful play. The initiative operates in cooperation with the country’s gambling regulator and a specialised addiction treatment facility, providing professional assistance to both players experiencing gambling problems and their families.

The service forms part of Slovakia’s broader responsible gambling framework, aimed at strengthening prevention, early intervention, and treatment pathways for individuals affected by gambling-related harm.

Growing Demand for Gambling Support Services

The helpline, launched in early 2025, recorded 2,866 calls during its first year, according to figures released by Slovak authorities. Out of these, 1,124 calls were fully assessed through questionnaires and anonymised data collection, allowing specialists to better understand the scope and patterns of gambling-related issues among callers.

Most interactions are resolved quickly, with experts often able to stabilise the caller and direct them toward relevant support services or healthcare providers within minutes. However, some calls require extended conversations lasting more than 20 minutes, particularly when specialists provide crisis intervention.

Seasonal spikes were also observed. The highest volume of calls occurred during March and May, periods linked to increased betting activity around major sporting events such as the Ice Hockey World Championship.

Who Is Calling the Gambling Helpline?

According to programme coordinators, the majority of callers are active gamblers seeking assistance for their own behaviour. However, an increasing number of calls are now coming from family members and close relatives, reflecting broader awareness of gambling-related harm and the willingness of families to seek professional advice.

The helpline is staffed by psychologists and social workers with experience in treating both substance and behavioural addictions. Their roles include providing immediate guidance, assessing the severity of the problem, and directing callers toward appropriate treatment programs or counselling services.

Expansion of Services and 24/7 Availability

Initially operating between 09:00 and 01:00, the helpline has now expanded to round-the-clock availability, ensuring continuous support for those in need. Staffing has also increased to 21 specialists, enabling the service to manage growing demand more effectively.

Authorities are also exploring additional communication channels to make the service more accessible. Plans include introducing email and live chat counselling, which could help reach individuals who may be reluctant to seek help via phone. These improvements are part of broader efforts to strengthen player protection frameworks as the online gambling market in Slovakia continues to develop within a regulated and responsible environment.

A Broader Responsible Gambling Strategy

Regulators emphasise that the helpline is intended to be more than a crisis hotline. Instead, it forms part of a wider support system that integrates prevention, early intervention, treatment, and long-term recovery assistance for people affected by gambling problems.

This approach aligns with Slovakia’s broader efforts to strengthen oversight and research around gambling behaviour and policy development. These initiatives are also supported by collaboration between regulators, healthcare institutions, and academic partners aimed at improving evidence-based regulatory decisions.

Slovakia has also expanded cooperation with universities and researchers to review gambling regulation and develop stronger policy frameworks, highlighting the country’s commitment to balancing market growth with consumer protection. Slovakia’s gambling regulator has been working with academic institutions to analyse regulatory developments and improve responsible gaming strategies across the market.
