A New Path Into iGaming: How Careers Really Begin — A Conversation with Cordelia Morgan‑Cooper

Talking about careers in iGaming often sounds more mysterious than it really is. People imagine a closed world, impossible to enter without insider knowledge or years of experience. But when I sat down with Cordelia Morgan‑Cooper, founder of CMC Consulting and one of the most respected HR voices in the industry, the picture she painted was far more accessible — and far more encouraging.

Falling into iGaming — and why that’s normal

Cordelia didn’t grow up dreaming of iGaming. Like many people in the sector, she arrived here by accident. She began her career in the UK, at one of the world’s largest recruitment companies, working her way from graduate to branch manager. Then one rainy day, she saw a job ad for a role in Malta — a country she hadn’t even heard of at the time.

She applied anyway.

The role was above her experience level, and she didn’t tell her parents until she reached the final stage because she was convinced she wouldn’t get it. But she did. Six weeks later, she moved to Malta and stepped into a world she knew nothing about.

That leap became the foundation of her entire career.

The moment she knew iGaming was the right fit

Cordelia’s defining moment came during her time at Catena Media. The SEO department needed an entirely new team — fast. She and her team hired more than ten people in just 35 days. It was intense, exhausting, and transformative.

It also proved something important: resilience and perseverance matter more than industry familiarity.

“Sometimes you might get a few no’s, but it’s the yeses that really count,” she said. That mindset carried her through three years at Catena, where she helped hire more than 500 people, and later into senior HR roles before launching her own consultancy.

Do you need iGaming experience? Not necessarily

One of the biggest myths about the industry is that companies only hire people who already work in iGaming. Cordelia disagrees — with nuance.

Some companies are more open than others. Some roles, especially senior ones, require deep industry knowledge. But many positions, especially at junior and mid‑level, are accessible to people coming from completely different backgrounds.

The key is flexibility.

iGaming moves fast. Projects change direction. Priorities shift. Hierarchies are flat. If you’re used to rigid corporate structures, the pace can feel chaotic. But if you can adapt, communicate openly, and stay curious, you can thrive.

Showing adaptability without saying “I’m a fast learner”

Anyone can write “fast learner” on a CV. Cordelia wants proof. She encourages candidates to demonstrate growth through action — taking a course, reading industry material, or preparing deeply for interviews. Even small efforts signal initiative. What matters is showing that you’ve already started learning before anyone asked you to.

She also warns against the “spray and pray” approach — sending your CV to hundreds of companies and hoping something sticks. A personalised message to the right person goes much further than a generic application to everyone.

Transferable skills that matter

iGaming is broad — tech, marketing, product, finance, customer service, content, operations. That means many skills transfer well. Cordelia highlighted finance as a strong example: people from financial services often excel because they bring structure and discipline to fast‑moving environments. Tech roles are naturally transferable, and customer service remains one of the most common entry points, especially for multilingual candidates. Content roles have also been the starting point for many senior leaders in the industry.

At senior levels, industry experience becomes more important. But at junior and mid‑level, passion, curiosity, and adaptability can outweigh a lack of direct experience.

Networking: the real accelerator

If there’s one message Cordelia repeats loudly, it’s this: networking is everything.

Her first clients came from people she met in person. Her biggest opportunities came from conversations, not job boards. And she believes anyone — even introverts — can learn to network. The first event is intimidating, the second is easier, and by the third you realise the industry is far more welcoming than you expected.

She encourages newcomers to start small: local meetups, casual drinks, or joining a colleague at an event. Networking doesn’t require being loud — it requires being present. Many roles in iGaming are never advertised; they’re filled through relationships, introductions, and timing.

A final thought

Cordelia’s story is proof that iGaming isn’t a closed club. It’s an industry built by people who took chances, changed direction, and learned on the job. If you bring curiosity, resilience, and a willingness to adapt, you can build a career here — even if you start from zero.
